Preparing for a Job Interview

Purpose of Preparing
Our purpose in conducting mock job interviews is to help you walk into a real interview with confidence.  By preparing, you can minimize language barriers, speak with purpose, and demonstrate that you have the requisite interpersonal skills to work in the American workplace.  Remember, you can tactfully direct the conversation through the information that you share about yourself.

Job Interview Exercises
Complete these exercises to help you prepare mentally, physically, socially, and verbally.  Many interviews ask a similar set of questions.  Your job is to prepare responses that highlight your qualifications.  You are "selling yourself", but not in an arrogant way, of course!  Your purpose is to let the company understand what you can contribute.

Mock Interview Analysis
What are we looking for during the mock interview?  Look at the guide we will use to summarize the practice run.

After the mock interview, we will discuss the analysis, plus an audio transcript of your interview, to pinpoint specific areas you can work on to make the real interview a success.

Job Search Stress
Stress in an undeniable part of a job search for anyone.  It may be even harder for immigrants juggling concerns about classes, visas, a foreign culture, income, family pressures, etc.  You're already doing your best to study hard and look for a job, but the future is so uncertain, and waiting, waiting, waiting is excruciatingly hard.  We know because we've been there! Here are a few Scripture verses that have given us strength and hope in stressful times.  Pray and ask God to guide your path and open doors according to the plans He has for your life.

Jeremiah 29:11-13
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know?  Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
