"When the going gets tough" is a phrase that means "when the situation becomes difficult." Some ways it's commonly used:
How should people of faith respond in the face of trials and suffering?
1. Respond in faith with prayer. In Bible Club, as the children share their burdens, we take these to a powerful, loving Heavenly Father in prayer. Does God hear the prayers of hurting children? Absolutely. Scripture is filled with promises of God's presence with those who call on Him, such as these in Psalm 55.
"Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.....Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall."
2.Respond with thanksgiving. One of our families, going through a very stressful time, is choosing to count their blessings each day. Rather than moping or worrying, the parents are trusting God's will and demonstrating profound gratitude for each grace they encounter. The result is a deep sense of the Lord's love for their family. What an amazing testimony of their faith!
Sooner or later, we will face trials. Our trials have a purpose - to refine our faith to result in praise, honor and glory to God.
Scripture: In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (I Peter 1:6-8 )
Lord, help each of our families to respond to trials in faith with prayer and with thanksgiving. Help us to stand so our faith is refined and proved genuine - with all praise, glory and honor to You.
- When the going gets tough, the tough get going. (In the face of difficult circumstances, strong people take action.)
- When the going gets tough, I'll be there for you.
