The children in Bible Club have really enjoyed hearing the story of David and Goliath (I Samuel 17.) David, "little more than a boy," defeats the nine-foot-plus tall giant with his slingshot and five smooth pebbles.
Sometimes believers have to fight giants too. Internal giants like doubt and fear, external giants such as opposition.
When the giant comes, taunting and sneering, the truth anchors believers in the sovereignty and omnipotence of God. God has won the war. Believers have access to God's power. The enemy has been defeated. God is faithful to carry His children through the challenge.
Chris Tomlin's song "Whom Shall I fear?" reminds us that there is nothing to fear when we face the giant.
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I'm holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
Like David, our battle cry can be, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel....All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands." (I Samuel 17)
